Description: DREAMINGWhen lights are dimmed and evening falls,And there’s no one home but me,I begin to dream of castles and kings,That come in my reverie.I’m now a queen on a golden throne,With servants all around; And entering comes a handsome prince,To the blaring trumpet’s sound. Now I’m a fairy with bright shining wings,Flitting around in the blue,Or maybe an actress upon a great stage,Or a singer or great writer, too.But now all my dreams are fading away,And the clock chimes softly eleven;Though my imagining’s done, I’d still like to beMaybe an angel flying in heaven.Martha Feltus, 9th Grade.NEEDLE TRAVELI sit at home and sew,I ply my needle and thread,But the trip around the garment’s hemIs not the path I tread. Each needle thrust I’m farther awayFrom this tiresome task I do—I’m floating around the ballroomIn a gown of gorgeous hue.I hum a tune as I hem;The music and partner are fine; Our feet weave an intricate patternOf wonderful design.I dance and dance at the ball,And gracefully sway and bend; But oh! All suddenly, I findMy hem has come to an end.Rita Mercille, 8th GradeA MILLION DOLLARSIf I had a million dollars to spend,I’d not know what to do.I probably would buy a mateFor my old worn-out shoe. And then I’d have my hair cutTo tidy up a bit.I’d buy a pair of socksThat would half-way fit;And find a patch (a pretty one)To sew on my ragged knee; But what I’d do with all the restIs a mystery to me.Mac Gavit, 8th GradeCOMMON THINGSHave you ever stopped to thinkWhat a lovely thing is rain,With its long silver streamersAnd its patter on the pane ?Have you ever stopped to seeA rainbow shine through showers,Or a bumbly bumble beeBuzzing ’round the lovely flowers ?Have you ever stopped to hearThe robin’s merry tweet,Or the grocery boy’s gay whistle,As he drives on down the street? If you ever stopped to think,Or to listen, or to see,You would find that all these common thingsAre beautiful and free.Beverly Palmer, Sth GradePage thirty-nine
