Merits Seasons SuccessThis years football team, under new coach WayneNichols, went from last years 2-7-1 record to a winning 6-4 season. It was winning the first two gamesthat put the team on its feet and started the ball rolling. Part of the reason the team was able to continuewinning was the fact that there were few injuries sustained during the season. The coach attributed this tothe teams respect for his conditioning techniques. Some contributing win factors were the generallyexcellent blocking, and leadership and seasoningadded by Seniors like Jim Clayton, Phil Dawson, BjornHalsteen, and Chris Gilliam. The defense was madeeffective by the efforts of tackles and ends such asHedrick, Cambell, Bain, and Curts. And, while BobSuer and Jim Curts added great offensive blocking,Miller and Hall, coach commented, were as goodas any guard Ive ever seen.Of course, good blocking should be put to good useby the backfield, so Gregg Floyd quarterbacked thisyears Univees with poise and received fine runningperformances from Jim Clayton and Tim Thompson.Jim played right halfback and Tim, fullback, whileChris Gilliam and Bob McKintyre were alternate lefthalfback players.Jim Clayton, who rushed for a total of 950 yards, scored 76 points and was chosen as an alternate halfback in the annual North-South All-Star game.Another season-record setter was Bjorn Halsteen, who scored a 100 yard touchdown from a missedfield goal attempt, for the longest single gain of theseason.Though we didnt make it to the Rose Bowl, it wasa nearly comparable effort for a Univee comeback.Man on man, Tim Thompson accepts thechallenge.A rare moment of solace for the coaching staff., <•■ ■ ■ f,.* I^**-*r*-Jim Clayton breaks a tackle against Mitchell.67 |
