Long a dream of many people connected withU-School, a Univee swimming team was formed thisyear. Although new on the aquatic scene, the teamrolled to a 4-4 season record and a fifth place finish in the state meet. Senior Dick Allen broke staterecords in the 200 and 400 yard freestyle at thestate meet and was selected by participating coachesas the outstanding swimmer at the state meet.In his first year as coach, Don Lewis led the UHSbasketball team to its best record since 1945. TheFalcons compiled a 15-6 record including wins ineleven out of their last fourteen games. In consecutive games, Smithville was smothered by a Univeeone-game high in a 94-52 tilt, and Brown County,heavily favored, fell before a magnificent defense,88-66. Ellettsville proved to be the years villain:The Eagles swept two virtually uncontested matches—82-53 and 68-53, the latter taking the Univeesout of the sectional in the semi-finals. Senior BillWeigel broke the UHS record for the most pointsin one season—394.The Univee baseball team turned in a very fineseason, winning eight and losing only two. Superiorpitching by John Young and good hitting by WayneWitmer and John Hartman were the reasons formuch of the teams success.Coach Walt Gray piloted the Golf team througha very successful season. UHS finished second inthe sectional and eighth in the state meet to finishthe season.The 1962 Univee Tennis team enjoyed a verysuccessful and victorious season coached by JimMason. Of the teams three defeats, two were byonly one point.Coached by Bob Kelley, UHSs track team posteda record of 31 wins and 22 losses. Coach Kelleywas faced by the problem of not having enoughrunners to make a really outstanding team.88 |
