Description: U-School is composed of ten departments in thejunior and senior high schools, and an elementarydepartment. The elementary department concentrates on recognizing and challenging often-hiddenabilities in the young child. The upper grades attemptto polish and widen the students skills.There are three departments with staffs whichteach students all through their University Schoolcareer: music, art, and physical education. The music and art departments develop dexterity in theirindividual fields. The physical education departmentdevelops physical strength through their daily classesand knowledge of the body through the health classes. Its program also offers drivers education.An English department is the most basic and perhaps the most necessary department a school canhave. In addition to the reguired English courses,Journalism, the Novel, and Dramatic Literature arealso offered at U-Schcol. By teaching the student toexpress himself fluently and clearly, and to understand what others say and write, the entire Englishdepartment leads him to an increased enjoyment ofour language.The University School program includes instruction in four foreign languages: French, Spanish, Russian, and Latin. The foreign language teachers concentrate on teaching the customs and cultures of theforeign countries as well as the literature and history of the country.Ancient and present day cultures, customs, andknowledge of governments in foreign countries aswell as our own are taught by the social studiesdepartment. By studying past endeavors and incidents, students learn how to handle present and future situations.The science department is trying to encouragestudents who might someday become outstandingscientists in the world. It accomplishes this not onlythrough the regular science courses, but also by encouraging interest and participation in the annualScience Fair.The U-School mathematics department now offers a fifth year mathematics course, in addition tothe reguired algebra. Interest in the mathematicsfield has grown to the point where University nowhas a math club—Ungawa, Ungawa, Ungawa, sponsored by Jerry McIntosh.The University High School business education department teaches courses in bookkeeping, typing,and shorthand. The skills learned in these classes often help the student in his career after graduation.The home economics department teaches boysand girls in the seventh and eighth grades basicknowledge of sewing and cooking.Kay Douglass plays the flute in the U-Schoolband.Elementary students play on the equipment inthe front of the school.rdf6
