BYROADSUp! Up! my friend, and quit your books,Or surely youll grow double!Travelers on main highways often become tense and weary of theirjourney. Traffic there moves directly with regularity and speed. In recentyears a great many improvements have been made along the highways toprovide rest and recreation for the traveler. On the Road of Education, alluring side-roads invite one to become a wayfarer and to follow the trailsof personal interests. These Activities Roads tempt one to turn from thehighway of academic courses to refreshing little excursions.Once the traveler has swung upon this new path, he finds his surroundings different and intriguing. No longer must he heed traffic signals norrace with the fellow ahead. He now may stop anywhere along the road oreven roam the nearby countryside. He finds companions with whom toexplore his new-found trail. Perhaps he desires to try out his talents indramatics. He sees other students who much prefer to become scientistsfor the day. Participating in a service club satisfies those who care to domore than merely to entertain themselves. Other little byways familiarizestudents with the world of vocations, and frequently these small trailsbranch into a life work. The outing on the Activities Roads may be short, but it sends the traveler back to books and lessons, back to the main highway, renewed in body, mind, and spirit.Page twenty-seven |
