Description: Evolving from the narrow footpath to the broad, hard-surfaced superhighway of today, the road has come to be a symbol of civilization. Nocountry could have made much progress without roads. From the very beginning of time, man has advanced with the road. Ages ago the world ofman was confined to a small area of the earth’s surface, and his accomplishments were but a mere footpath into what was to come. Adventure beckoned him beyond the horizon, and visions and dreams became part of his soul. The narrow path broadened for the pack-horse and for the four-wheeledwagon, for stage-coach and carriage, for automobile and truck. Men fulfilled their dreams and made roads that other men might follow. As theymarched onward, the road endlessly rolled out. The life of a nation dependsupon the road. In truth, the road is the symbol of life itself.Every road, whether short or long, leads somewhere; and that somewhere determines the value of the road to those who travel it. Travelerschoose a road according to what it has to offer them. If it leads to a desired destination, they speed along with eagerness and determination, paying careful attention to signs and observing traffic regulations. Now andthen an inquiry addressed to someone who knows the road will save timeand remove all doubt of direction. Frequently side roads lure travelersaway from the mass of traffic, and the inherent sense of exploration in manguides him over these less traveled roads. Through persistent effort thetraveler often blazes a new trail that many after him may follow. Newroads are usually rough and difficult, lonely and discouraging, but the trueadventurer and pioneer is courageous and far-seeing. New roads will always be opening for those who will take the risk of traveling them. In theyears to come the road will continue to broaden and lengthen and to guideman to his destination.and its milestones are the years.”Page seven
