Hungry Univees adoptedpizza as their own; submarines ranked high onthe list, but the perennial favorite was stillHamburger and a coke, please.” Clothes fadsran the gamut from sloppy sweatshirts to sophisticated formal wear. A favorite hobby wascollecting sweatshirts embossed with camp insignia or college seals. Boys wore hats of allshapes and sizes: Army fatigue hats, Tyroleanfelts with jaunty feathers, even ten-gallon Stetsons. Boys still preferred the crew neck sweater, but the Perry Como three-button modelcame into its own. Both boys and girls worevests, long or short, knit or wool. No girl waswithout her white tennis shoes and her blazer.Every girl had at least one, usually white; andby spring even the boys had caught blazer fever.Girls’ legs appeared in every imaginable colorof the newest leotards: Bohemian black, brightred, and vivid blue. Girls carried their valuable possessions in chemise bags this year. Jewelry fads included a tiny cultured pearl on a chainor heavy gold initials on a long chain. Girlsgoing steady wrapped the boy’s ring with tapepainted with nail polish, or, newer still, angorayarn. Rock and Roll still dominated musicaltastes at U-School, but the followers of modernjazz increased steadily. New dances were theCha-lypso, Stroll, Mexican Hat Rock, and theConga line.
