Second row: Bob Conard, David Thomas, Steve Wenning,Jim Binkley, Toivo Raun, Nick Fattu, Coach Robert Kelley.Coach Robert Kelley’s 1959 cross-countryteam posted a winning season with five winsand three losses. They defeated Linton, SwitzCity, Martinsville, Gerstmeyer, Nashville, andlost to Bloomfield, Martinsville, and Wiley. TheU-School harriers1 also participated in the Shortridge Invitational, placing 5th out of 13. Individually, Bill Carter, co-captain, won sevenmeets and placed 2nd in the Shortridge Invitational. Dan Carter, freshman, placed 3rd in thefreshman division of the Shortridge Invitational and won the Bloomington Freshman meet.Allan Marshall, sophomore, placed 2nd in sevenmeets, 1st in one, and 8th at Shortridge. BobConard, Jim Binkley, Shaun Byrnes, and ToivoRaun provided the necessary support for theteam by turning in a number of fine performances. Three seniors1, Bill Carter, Jim Binkley,co-captain, and Toivo Raun will be missingwhen the team reports for practice next fall.U-School’s trackmen, coached by Robert Kelley, faced an unusually heavy schedule of meetsthis year as they competed against Manual,Warren Central, Linton, Gerstmeyer, Brazil,Plainfield, Mitchell, Martinsville, and Edinburgh. On the 26th of March, the U-Schoolthinlines participated in the Hoosier Relays, thelargest indoor high school track meet in theworld. The track team also competed in theB. H. S. Relays, Linton Relays, Bedford Relays,and the sectional meet. Only two returninglettermen, Bill Carter and Phil Galyan, wereamong the 37 boys reporting for the firstpractice of the 1960 season. Also returning fromlast year’s track squad were Allan Marshall,Shaun Byrnes, Joe Roman, Bob Conard, DickCarter, Rick Newton, and Joe Keough. BobMcCoy, who joined the track squad this year,turned in fine performances all during the season, as did the other returning trackmen.36 |
