Description: . . with the invaluable aid of the libraryAs Dr. James B. Conant and Dr. James Workcampaigned vigorously for more composition inEnglish, U-School put more emphasis on writing. Seniors wrote at least one essay each week, and juniors were divided into five, rather thanfour sections so that they, too, might spendmore time writing. The National ScholasticWriting Contest inspired many students, someof whom entered the contest more than once. For the second year in a row, a UniversitySchool student received honors from the National Council of Teachers of English. This yearChristie Dickason was commended for her writing ability by the NCTE. The English department did some experimental work with abilitygrouping in 9th and 12th grades and plans tocontinue such grouping next year. With the assistance of Miss Armstrong, the departmentbegan a program in library skills. Each English class spent one week becoming acquaintedwith various library guides: the periodical indexes, the atlasses, the card file and special reference books.Late in the year, the old typing rooms wereconverted into a language laboratory costingapproximately $20,000. Thirty booths, eachcontaining a tape recorder, earphones and amicrophone, were installed. From the mastercontrol board, the teacher may talk to each orall of the students. She may also play from threeto five master” tapes simultaneously, so thatdifferent lessons are heard by different students.By turning on his tape recorder, the student mayrecord the teacher’s pronunciation of a word, record bis pronunciation, and compare his pronunciation to hers. This laboratory increases thepupil-teacher contact hours, giving the teachermore opportunity to handle individual studentdifferences and weak spots. It also increases theamount of time that each student can spendin the repetition and oral drill necessary inlearning a foreign language. During hours whenall thirty booths are not used by class members, language students who wish to listen to tapes orrecord assignments may use the laboratory.Mrs. Wickam, library assistant, shows seventh graders Steve bach, and Jimi Carter how to look up subjects in the Reader sBuckingham, Regina Dionisopolas, George Estes, Richard See- Guide.*LILIII . >1I-Z .-.Uv21
