Description: |
We progress through conic sections and quadraticsThis year Hazel Cuffey became the fifthU-Schooler to win the Westinghouse TalentSearch in the past eight years. Hazel was recognized for her work on the antibiotic properties of slime molds (mycetozoa). David McMullen was runner-up with his paper on enzymesynthesis. The science department has alsoeffected significant changes in the science curriculum. Freshman may now take either lifeor earth science, rather than biology. In addition, horticulture is now available in the summer. In the mathematics department, U-Schoolis currently trying several new math programs.Under the instruction of Mr. John Ray, oneseventh grade section is doing advanced work.Using the standard eighth grade text, thesestudents will do elementary work in numbertheory, geometry and algebra. Under the supervision of Dr. Phillip Peak, the math programsare no longer stressing mechanical skills likeadding up long columns of figures. Such skills1have lost their importance in today’s world ofadding machines and calculators. Emphasis isplaced on studying more advanced math, suchas groups, sets! and other number systems. Seniors may take trigonmetry during the firstsemester and choose between solid and analyticgeometry during the second.fr—Dick Loft, Anne Schell, and Bill Wylie demonstrate differentconic sections in Mathematics III.Ben Cox, social studies, sponsor of Eighth Grade; Mrs. LoisEverard, business; Pat Fehl, physical education and health, sponsor of GAA, Booster Club, and Seventh Grade; Mrs. Mar¬tha Fox, music; Mrs. Ellen Gold, English and journalism, sponsor of QUAD, JORDANNUS, and Senior Class.18 |
