Take a look at U-School — your school —soon to be your alma mater. Look at its limestone walls, its symmetrical, rectangular windows, its two large frontdoorways; look at the long, curving sidewalk leading fromJordan Avenue to the entrances.Walk in, senior. Take a look at the stairways before you.Go on to the first floor. You see the office where staffand deans spend countless hours planning and executingthe complex organization of a high school. There is thecafeteria where you’ve spent many lunch hours mixingfood with conversation.Retrace your steps to the front entrance, and notice theinlaid floor plaque. How often you’ve leisurely joked withfriends here — waiting for the end of your lunch period,or just relaxing. Go on up the stairs to the second andthird floors. Imprint the sight of lockers, classrooms, teachers, and bustling students on your mind, for this is theheart of your school.Linger a moment, but don’t tarry. Remember, but don’tregret. Your future is ahead of you. You’ve learned muchin these rooms. Now apply it! Open the door of opportunityand use your knowledge, personality, and talents in whatever field you choose. Choose wisely, senior. You havereceived a great heritage; prove yourself worthy of it!85
