This was the date of the Junior Carnival—the largest activity that the classhad undertaken in its high school career.The Barbary Coast,” situated along theEmbarcadero, a crescent-shaped street whichruns three and a half miles along the baycoast of San Francisco, was the setting of theentire carnival. The time was the Gold Rushof ’49, when masses of people ventured toCalifornia.Besides the huge stage show, On TheBarbary Coast,” some of the other attractions were the Green Dragon, Cake Walk,Fish Pond, Movies, Science Show, and Bingo.The crowning” event of the evening wasthe coronation during which Barbara Crouchand Art Fell were crowned Queen and Kingof the ’52 Carnival.Class HistoryBeginning their high school career at UHS, the members of the Class of ’53 entered upon aneventful time in their lives—a four-year period that would never be forgotten—a periodin which the class members would make friendships, participate in numerous activities, andgain knowledge for the future.As Freshmen, they held their first class function—a school dance, The Club Hop” wasthe theme, and a King and Queen of Clubs ” were crowned.With the election of a Sophomore Council, the class was organized in its second year of highschool. In addition to holding several parties, the class presented a dance, The SophomoreSweep.”Climaxing the activities of the Junior year, the Junior-Senior banquet and prom were heldthe evening of May 10, 1952.Sponsoring the after-game dances, conducting a magazine sales campaign, and presentingthe Jordannus and Senior convocations were just a few of the many functions of the classduring its final high school year.May 9 was the date of the banquet and prom given in tribute to the graduating Seniors.On the lighter side followed Senior Tramp and Junior Joe Day—then the glorious part ofbeing a Senior—Senior Week.”The Class of ’53 completed its days at U-School, attended the traditional Baccalaureateceremony, and received diplomas in Alumni Hall where the Commencement exercises wereheld.Page fifty-eight
