ENGLISH-AN IMPORTANT P^RT OF OUR CURRICULUM (cont.)is duo to freshman failures or, as they arc more commonly calledflunks. A part of the latter question I am going to leave foryou to answer. I shall merely state that an examination ofstatistical reports on those flunks will reveal that the numberof failures occurring in freshman English in our colleges anduniversities is equal to the combined numbar of failures in allother freshman courses. So with these facts in mind, let usquit giving the study of English the back scat and put it inthe front row whore it rightfully belongs.ORCHESTRASeventy three in orchestra this year??? Yes, the combinedenrollment in the beginning and advanced orchestra classes thisyear is seventy-three compared to the original nineteen, whowero drafted last fall. This numerical increase has boon accompanied by a boon of enthusiasm. These fortyfive beginnerswero eager to try after they witnessed the progress of the lastyear. They arc- eagerly awaiting the day when they will bo permitted to wear one of those maroon uniforms.Maybe it is the brass buttons, perhaps the color anyway, who can fail to observe the increase in school spirit as a result of the uniforms ! The opening days of school last fallwore days of anxiety for members of ths orchestra. Mrs. Bugelanswered an average of a dozen questions a day Did they come? Our first public appearance w^s from a truck bed in the FallFestival parade at Ellettsville. The summer rehearsals in the evening following afternoon,4-H meetings not only kept the group in practice but proved tobe a source of enjoyment.Six additional instruments wore added this year, three oft-hom now ones. Our goal this year was a new selection mastered each weak.We have achieved our goal by adding four selections to our repertoire each month. Another goal was that each member makea public appearance at least once during the year, either as asolo or in an ensemble. This experience was invaluable for thedevelopment of poise.Left, left, left right, loft. Our immediate anticipationare centered around a bund, yes- -A MaRCHING BAND. |
