AgricultureElmer Cudworth (11)MathematicsHISTORY OF SMITHVILLE HIGH SCHOOLSmithville High School began in the school year 1909-10.The first class to graduate was in 1913 and it consisted of onlyone member, Miss Maude Harrell, who later became a teacher ofS. H. S. Since that time, including the present class of 1940approximately 490 have graduated from this school.In February 1936 the school burned. The high school mem-bers were then s°nt to the Indiana University to complete theiryear. The grades were sent to Harrodsburg and the Wooden schoolhouse. Despite the disadvantages, a class of thirty-seven mem-bers graduated. For the following year the K. P. Hall, thedepot, a restuarant, and the- gymnasium, were made to accommodatethe students. During the second, year at these buildings, the costruction of a new building was begun. This building was dedi-cated April ’38 with the members of the High School participating.The school was completed in September and the students took pos-session. The first class to graduate was the class of 38-’39,with eighteen members. The year ’39-’40 has a graduating classof thirty-eight members. |
