Description: BASKET BALL BANQUETAs an expression of the appreciation of the school forthe way the basket-ball team performed during the season,the girls of the Home Economics Department served a threecourse dinner during the week following the sectionaltourney. Miss Harrell acted as toast mistress. Aftermaking a short talk commending the team and wishing themgreater success next year, Miss Harrell called . for shortspeeches from Principal A. E. Botkin, Coach Cloyce V.Quakenbush, and each of the team members. In these shorttalks the ambitions for the year ahead ranged from placingfirst instead of second in the Tri-County standing and winning the Tri-County tourney to playing in the finals ofthe state tourney in the Butler Field House.Everett Case, basket-ball coach of the Frankfort HighSchool that has won the state championship three years, inhis speech at the Smithville High School Basket-Ball-Banquet.last year said,Championships are not achieved by luck butare visualized far ahead and come as a result of working forperfection of skills that enable the Athlete to obtaintheobjective.” The Smithville High School wishes the boys wellin their future efforts to bring about some of theaspirations expressed in their short speeches and they aregrateful to the Home Economics girls and Miss Harrell forthis banquet and sociability.In concluding the summary of athletics for this seasonit can be said that a total of 59 games have been played todate in soft ball and basket-ball by the High School andJunior High School teams with 54 wins or an average of 37per cent wins.Also in first team basket-ball games, Smithville scored6o6 points for an average of 26.4 points a game while theopponents were scoring 539 for an average of 23*4 points agame.JUNIOR HIGH ATHLETICSUnder the mentorship of Coaches Frank Hill and HaroldJacobs the junior high athletes enjoyed a good season thisyear both in baseball and basketball. The basketball team,under the leadership of Captain ’’Brick” Fox, Supported byRayle, Manion, Baugh, and Kelly, made a good showing in eachof the two tourneys in which they participated,and succeeded
