How-ever when she learns that John’s oldaunt is the one who makes the offer and that the Professorthinks she is an ignoramus, in a fit of pique she forgetsher promise to her brother and gracefully accepts John’soffer before the whole school.Act two takes place on the same campus on CommencementDay one year later. Maryida surprises everyone with hersplendid work during the year. She has been crowned Queenand everybody is waiting for the finishing event of the day,the Commencement Ball, when it is learned that John’s auntis not coming and according to an old rule of the schoolMaryida cannot attend the ball as she has no chaperon. Thenevents follow one another rapidly. Maryida learns thatinstead of an aunt, June and John have paid her way throughschool. Miss Stone, the President, angered by their subterfuge will not allow June to chaperon Maryida, and recallsJohn and Junes invitation to the ball. Maryida indignantlyleaves for home.In the meantime Rod and his mother arrive. They weresummoned by Tommy the comedian of the play. Tommy is sentpost-haste after Maryida on his motorcycle and she isbrought back.The Professor is quite overcome by the beauty and poiseof Maryida’s Mother and declared that the source ofMaryida’s good breeding and fine mind is at last made plainand in spite of John’s Seeming proof to the contrary, hestill believes in heredity.Red who has found a fine job and won a wonderful prizefor an invention, pays Maryida’s debts in full. ThePresident forgives John and June and so the wash lady’s sonand daughter make good and all ends happily.NEGRO MINSTRELA negro Minstrel waspresented by the High School GleeClub on November 11, 19^8.The cast for the minstrel was made up of fourteen boysfrom the Glee Club. Each had a negro part and Mr. Sargentacted as interlocutor man for the jokers.
