Other schoolsrepresented were Gosport, Unionville, Paragon, andStinesvilleThe word in the elimination contest which had most ofthe participants ”up in the air was ’’balloon, however, thefollowing seven survived the first round: James East;Smithville; Katherine Baker, Unionville; Harold Spicer,Gosport; Verlie Know, Paragon; Helen Baker, Stinesville;Francis Hawkins, Unionville, and Florence Beaman, Paragon.All these seven were eliminated the first round on thestage except Harold Spicer, the final winner. Verlie Knowrunner-up, and Katherine Bakerthird. Some of the wordsmis-spelled were Acquiescence, Amenable, obsequious,comestible, and notable.Harold Spicer, a senior, was awarded a medal from theSouthern Sporting Goods Store of Bloomington. Mr. Leuck,County Superintendent was official word pronouncer for thecontest.GLEE CLUB HISTORYThe first Smithville High School Glee -Club wasorganized in 1914. The leader was Bernice Kinser, and therewere approximately forty members enrolled.During the years from 1914 to 1938 the Glee Club gaveperformances at convocations and baccalaureates, andpresented the following operettas, ’’The Feast of the RedCorn, Belle of Barcelona, ’’Belle of Bagdad, ’’Oh Doctor,Bits O’Blarney, and Love Pirates of Hawaii.This year the Glee Club had an enrollment of 99members, it being compulsory for all freshmen to take it.They gave an operetta, Ask the Professor, and a blackfaced minstrel. Twenty of the members took part in the TriCounty Music Festival held on February 13, at IndianaUniversity.ORCHESTRA HISTORYThe first orchestra at Smithville was organized in theschool year of 1923-26.
