I; 175I felt a tremendous amount of sadness this year thatour country was once again at war. I remember theHarmony kids during the days directly before the U.S.made the decision to enter into the war. They werehaving a hard time settling down and Charlie, Michele, and I were wondering what was going on; making noconnection between their behavior and the building crisisin the Gulf. But, after hearing about several games ofwar dodgeball in the gym, we decided to hold a familymeeting to discuss feelings, fears, etc. about the crisis. After showing where everything was happening on a largeworld map, I asked the kids to share what theyd heardabout the crisis and to ask any questions or share anyconcerns that they might have. The kids questions andknowledge of events really surprised me. They wanted toknow about poisonous gasses, whether bombs from Iraqcould reach us in Bloomington, if some of their unclescould be drafted. One little girl wanted to know why wehad given weapons to Iraq so that now they would be ableto use them against us! Some of the kids were worriedabout relatives in the Middle East and all the kids wereworried about what would happen to the children ofKuwait, Iraq, and Israel. I wondered at the time that ifour kids were filled with such concerns and fears whatmust the children of the Middle East be feeling. I didntknow then, I dont know now, and theres a part of methat hopes I will never find out. I do know that I willcontinue to work for peace and to hope that somedayworldwide peace will be attainable. .j 57 |
