Harmony School, 2001, Page 3

Description: muummmumurnI < tdo-it-yourself?Yeah, thats the idea. Each student would designtheir own page. The teachers & yearbook staffwould assist where needed—taking pictures, outputting type, scanning things, helping withPhotoShop, etc. But the goal was that each personwould determine their own page. Why? Well, U Mag, what we had been doing, had gone as far as we thought it could. In truth, itexceeded our expectations in both product &process. So where to go but sideways. The staffrecognized that the do-it-yourself idea had itschallenges—the book would certainly be ahodgepodge of styles ranging from cut & paste toentirely computer created. This was ok—the mixwould simply reflect the range of ages of Harmonystudents. But what if kids didnt want to do ityourself? What if they didnt want to participateat all? That would have to be ok, unfortunateperhaps, but still ok. So, it was with sometrepidation that we launched this issue. It was that sense of trepidation that pushed us tomove to a new shape. And as with all designdecisions, that change needed to make sense, tohave a purpose. We returned to the do ityourself theme and came up with the cornerproject. After much deliberation, we chose tocarefully place in these corners all the ingredientsneeded to make a school. We would leave it to thereader as to how they went together—but the rawmaterials would be there. It was while doing thisthat we discovered Esther had beaten us to thepunch. She was already there, in the corners, nosing about the stuff.
