Description: Physical Education Program of the SchoolThe physical education program of the school is very extensive. It starts with the first grade andgoes through the twelfth. Both girls and boys participate. The grade children, under the directionof Mrs. Byers, engage in folk dancing, contests, relays, games, tumbling, gymnastic exercises, andmarching. They also have a Tumblers Club which has performed for several organizations, such asthe Schoolmens Club of Southern Indiana, the Parent-Teachers Association, and others.From the seventh grade to the twelfth, the boys and girls are very active. The girls have a competitive organization known as the G. A. A. Each girl has a chance to make a certain number of pointsby engaging in certain sports such as horseback riding, baseball, basketball, tennis, etc. They have also played basketball games with other schools.The boys have a well balanced program consisting of soft ball, basketball, and health exerciseswith a high degree of interest in basketball. All boys are urged to take part in some part of thehealth program. Each year, through the cooperation of all, the May Day exercises are held. Eachgrade has a certain part to play. A king and queen is selected by popular vote of the student body;they are to reign at the exercises. Irene Miller and Lee Addie will reign this year as queen and king.JDLL BALL TEA/UThe Ellettsville softball team opened the season very strongly by romping Smithville in a one sidedaffair, 27-0.Unionville tried desperately to defeat the boys but the Eagles, avenged last springs defeat, 10-4.Stinesville invaded Ellettsville but went back limply with a 7-2 setback.The Monroe county tournament was staged at the Cascades park in Bloomington, and the Eaglesafter a slow start, tightened down to beat Unionville in the first game, 5-2. They whitewashed Stinesville, 5-0 to gain there the second straight county championship.The Eagles journeyed to Loogootee to play in the Southwestern Conference tournament. Theyfought their way to the finals by defeating Loogootee, 10-1, and Odon, 10-7. In the final game theEagles led until the fifth inning and Montgomery went ahead to win 7-5.The next day the tired Eagles went to Martinsville where the tri-county tournament was held.Ellettsville once more defeated Stinesville, 9-0. In the next game they also made quick work of Eminence, 10-0. While the Eagles were breezing along, Unionville had plenty of trouble but finally cameout on the long end by defeating Gosport and Paragon by small margins. The final game was stagedat Ellettsville during the Fall Festival. The colorful Eagles, in their new suits, didnt lose much timeand crushed the Arrows, 12-6, for the third straight time this season. In doing that they gained theTri-County crown for the second straight year.In the past two seasons the Eagles have won the county championship twice, the tri-countychampionship twice, the southwestern championship and runner-up once each.Page Thirty-five
