Ellettsville High School, Llamarada, 1939, Page 15

Description: LLAMARADHISTORY OF CLASS OF 1939In digging through the annals of time amid dozens of dust covered documents, we noticed a picture bearing the label of PrimaryClass of 1927 of Ellettsville Public Schools, Ellettsville, Indiana. Thisbrings to ones mind a room full of timid, shy, little creatures, somewith dirty faces, some clinging to Mrs. Browns skirts, some crying, and some getting their knuckles cracked with a ruler. Such behaviorand conduct lasted for one year only, at which time we were promotedto Miss Prices room. Year after year the happy, carefree group ofyoungsters progressed, until one day in September, 1935, Mr. Weathersdesignated us as the freshmen of Ellettsville High School and appointed Mr. Carl Smith as our sponsor. At this time new recruits were received from Cross Roads School, Joint School, Vernal School, GrossSchool, Bloomington School, and ten new members came in from theeighth grade. This boosted the class roll to a total of sixty-six, whichwas the largest freshman class that has ever entered Ellettsville HighSchool. Even though we outnumbered the upper classmen, we tookour initiation in the form of old-fashioned hazing, but to our dismay,Mr. Weathers announced, at the end of the noon hour, that next yearwe would give a party and initiate the next class in the regular way.As this class traveled the upward road to higher education, one byone we members became lost in the insurmountable heights of geometry and the pitfalls of Caesar; unable to read the signboards of algebra and our digestion made bad by sour English, the class roll diminished to forty-three at the beginning of the junior year. At this timewe found our pathway much easier.Because of the death of our sponsor, during the summer months,Mr. Clarence Stewart was appointed as sponsor and Billy Kelly aspresident. All efforts were directed toward that great event, the Junior-Senior Banquet. After the meal, all members of both classes andthe faculty engaged in a snowball fight and then withdrew to theIndiana Theatre. In order to make this banquet possible, it was necessary for the juniors to sell candy at the ball games and give twopiays, entitled THREE DAYS OF GRACE, and WHO SAIDQUIT? We also sponsored the WHAS radio stars, The Texas Rangers and served lunch to three hundred spellers. In the fall of 1938, thirty-nine members appeared in our seniorlines with determination written on our faces: a determination to succeed. This year is the climax—Miss Raines was appointed co-sponsorand Grant Stewart, Jr., president; and with the co-operation of everyclass member in soliciting ads, in sponsoring two radio programs, TheTexas Rangers, and Sunshine Sue and in presenting the seniorplay, Small Town Romeo, we are able to publish this annual, whichis another milestone of our success and which we hope will guide andinspire the future classes to continue making old E. H. S. better.Fifteen
