Description: |
Ever ChangingEllettsville School is changing greatly in population. At present it boasts an enrollment of 1,080 smiling faces (as pictured on the end papers), almost doublethat of 1958. After the forty-one hard-working seniors are graduated this year, notone class remaining has less than sixty-three students. Although the senior class issmall in proportion to the rest of the school, it would appear huge to the one lonegraduate of 1887.When more students come to a school, inevitably new buildings are needed. In1957 a wing of eleven rooms was added to the old building for the elementary children. Since this building was outgrown in three years time, in 1960 thekindergarten and the first, second, and third grades moved into a new home onthe hill behind the old high school. Today E.H.S. is once again hurting for space. Asa second story to the wing was recently approved by the State Board of Tax Commissioners, construction will soon begin on this latest addition. But even so, theproblem of insufficient space will be remedied for only the next few years. A newhigh school building and gymnasium would be a dream come true for all of Ellettsville and Richland Township.Senior MemoriesFor the 1963 graduates the past twelve yearshold many happy memories. The most vivid ones,of course, began in September, 1962. At 8:15every morning, there was an early rush of schoolbus riders and students who walk or drive toreach their lockers in time to have a few minutesof visiting with their classmates before the ringing of the 8:30 bell. As soon as the morning gossip had been exchanged, all students hurried toget to class on time, longing for the lunch hourwhen once agai-n they could talk.At 12:15 their wish came true. While eating a heartymeal in the cafeteria, they found ample opportunity fora gab session. The fast eaters always found time topatronize the junior concession stand and dance in theEagles Nest. But the poor unfortunate few who werealways the last to be served and leave the cafeteria barely avoided being tardy to their fifth period class.Very few students remained to be seen in the hallsafter 3:25; unless, of course, it was the LLAMARADA stafftoiling away! |
