Description: ^^- LLAMARADA --„*History of Ellettsville High SchoolEllettsville School first began in 1823 in a log cabin with an openfireplace. William Rawlins taught the first school. The township has maintained the schools since 1860. The schoolswere taught by six men and one woman whose salaries were $447. Atthat time about 303 pupils were in Ellettsville schools. The averagedaily attendance was 37. Ellettsville today has a much higher attendancecompared with it then. The enrollment of 1936-37 was 468 and theaverage attendance is 445. The subjects taught at that time were Orthography, (Spelling), Arithmetic, English, Latin, and Algebra. The trustees were David Byers and J. M. Harris.A new brick building was built in 1871 and was used until six morerooms were built and the cost was $4725. A school board of three members controlled it and it was under the direction of the town. At firstthere were only two years of high school, then it was increased to threeand in 1907 became a commissioned high school with four years.About 1915 a new stone school was built. This township buildingreplaced the town school and many of the country schools. In 1924 the building became too small to hold all the pupils that werecoming to Ellettsville, and in 1925-26 a new section was added to the oldbuilding. The new part included a gym, assembly, and four classroomsand office. In 1934-35 the 7th grade was moved to a room of their own becausethe assembly was too crowded to hold them and a new teacher was hiredto teach them. Our new gymnasium was begun in 1934 and finished in 1936. It isa beautiful building. It is something for the Old Grads of E. H. S. topoint to with pride. Plans for obtaining more classrooms have been discussed. The school now has fifteen teachers, six in the first six grades andnine in the upper six grades. Some of the Courses given in high school areCommercial, Vocational, and Academic. It is the wish of the class of1937, that the school shall continue to grow and prosper with the comingyears.■--■-■*ImmmmMl
