Description: 1932-1933 SeasonWith eight of the first string men graduating in 1932 the outlook for the 1932-33 team was notexceedingly bright. Members of the second team of the year before filled the gaps left by graduationand made a fine record for Ellettsville High School. The men that were left over from the precedingyear were as follows: Dan Smith, Herman Gillespie, Lee Eads, Lowell Sharp, Charles Smith, RalphStevens. Hubert Stimson, Floyd Christie, Charles Baugh, Raymond Oliphant, Earl Stines, WayneEaston, Marion Welch, Joe Fogle, Clifton Gillespie, Willard Elliott, and Marshall Underwood. Sixof the above were lettermen. Bob Hines was chosen as manager for the year.The above boys made a record which was the best in the history of Ellettsville High School andthe best in Monroe County for many years. The victims of the Eagles included such teams as: CrispusAttucks of Indianapolis, Bloomfield, Smithville, Stinesville, Hope, and Shawswick. Ellettsville was theonly team to win twice from Stinesville. Shawswick, whom the Eagles defeated twice, defeated Mitchellin the Sectional Tournament. The record for the team was 18 games won and our only loss was thereturn game at Indianapolis with the Crispus Attucks. The Second team won 16 games and lost 4.The team loses by graduation the following men: Dan Smith, Forward; Herman Gillespie, Forward : Lee Eads, Guard; Hubert Stimson, Forward ; Marion Welch, Guard; and Ralph Stevens, Forward. Although the loss of these men will be felt keenly, Ellettsville has fine prospects for a good teamnext year and in years to come.COUNTY TOURNAMENTThe Eagles went to Bloomington January 28th with the hopes of winning the annual County Tour-ament. Our hopes were dashed to pieces when the high-flying Eagles were defeatd by the Smithvillequintet 17-12 in our opening game. Smithville then defeated the Bloomington Second team to win theCounty Championship.The Second team fared better in their division by defeating Smithville 27-11 in their first game.In the final game the Ellettsville Seconds captured the cup for the second straight year, by defeatingBloomington C team 24-12.Ellettsville placed 5 men on the All-County selections. Four in the second division and one in theFirst team division.SECTIONAL TOURNAMENTOn March 3, 4. the Eagles journeyed to Martinsville to participate in the Sectional Tournament.Our first game was Friday night with Paragon, whom we defeated by a 25-19 score. This victory putus in the semi-finals, with Martinsville as our next opponent. The Eagles put up a grand fight butwere defeated by a 22-11 score. This was the closest score that Martinsville was held to during theTournament. Martinsville won the Tournament by defeating Blomington in the final game 26-14.Ellettsville placed one man on the All-Sectional team.Page Thirty-four
