Description: |
Senior HistoryIn the fall of 1947 a troop of forty-eight bright-eyed tots entered this school forthe first time. During the long eight and a half months Mrs. Loeta McNeely andMrs. Frances Brown were given the job of breaking us in and corraling the wildgroup who have now become the 1959 Seniors. Returning to school again after avery short summer vacation, we entered the second grade under the watchfulness ofMrs. Eudora Mason and Mrs. Frances Brown. Without much success of putting agreat deal of knowledge into us, they passed us on to the third grade and to Mrs.Beatrice Tapp and Mr. Charles Carey. We were now big shots—so we thought—because we could write our names and even work a few difficult mathematical problems. In the fourth grade our guides were Mrs. Gledith Baynes and Mr. Charles Carey.Under the supervision of Miss Lillian Lockridge and Mrs. Emily Lyles we attendedour fifth year at school where we learned about this great country of ours throughour geography lessons. Then as we went on to the sixth grade, we held the power in our hands; that is, the poweras top class in grade school. Mrs. Emily Lyles and Mr. Russell Forsythe were our teachers and tried desperately toteach us long division. Finally after years of anxious waiting, we were seventh graders and had the great privilege ofchanging classes. After driving our sponsor, Mrs. Alice Pearson, nearly mad, we found ourselves in the eighth grade:and Mrs. Pearson discovered, to her amazement, that she was to be our sponsor for another yearBy some strange coincidence we were able to survive the inhuman FreshmanInitiation and to have a marvelous banquet. With the theme of South of theBorder, many beautiful senoritas and handsome senors attended, and were pleasedwith the guidance our sponsors, Mrs. Jean Hayes and Mrs. Dorcas Richardson, had given us. Mr. Hallie Weathers was given the job as sponsor during our sophomore year, and he has managed to stay with us the rest of the way. As juniors,we first received our class rings and gave our first play. During the basketballseason we were given the privilege of selling concessions to earn some much neededand wanted money. We also sponsored the prom with another good theme of Oriental Gradens. It has been said that it was the most beautiful prom ever given; andsince it lasted all night, the longest prom too. Gee, what a year! Now as seniors, we look back at the underclassmen and feel sorry for them becausewe know the struggling experiences they are going through. But we also look backwith deep regret because we shall miss the old halls and the fun we have had in them. Our only hope is that all forty-eight of us graduating in this year of 1959 will be assuccessful as we have been in our wonderful past.20 |
