Description: E.H.S. ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONEllettsville has the second oldest high school in Monroe County, established in the fall of 1884, and since that early day it can claim onethousand and fifty graduates, some of whom have reached high distinction. It was first only a one year course with a one-man principal and facultyfor the five students who were the first graduating class in the spring of1885. The term lasted only six months but later was changed to seven, eight, and eventually nine months. Gradually extra years were addeduntil by 1909 the present four year course came into being.E. H. S. has sent our graduates into almost every profession and tradeknown today. In the light of the present shortage of doctors, it is interesting to find five physicians on the roll of alumni, all of whom achievedsuccess. On the list of distinguished alumni are one minister, two lawyers, several nurses, army officers, journalists, commercial artists, publicschool teachers, principals, university instructors, draftsmen, artisans, and business executives.Ellettsville High School has had some unusual and interesting classesand experiences. In 1887 there was only one graduate, and the membersof the junior class accompanied the young man to the platform to preventhis commencement from being a lonely occasion. There have been threeall girl classes--in 1886, 1899, and 1918--and the first two date back tothe period when the inferiority of the feminine mind was a common belief. As a requirement for graduation each candidate had to prepare and memorize a lengthy speech on a weighty subject with a high moral tone. Nospeech, no diploma!Forty years after Ellettsvilles high school was born, the E.H.S.Alumni Association was organized by the Class of 1924 as its contribution to the school since it was not sufficiently wealthy to leave a materialgift. These young seniors, with the assistance of some of the olderalumni, completed a roster of graduates, issued invitations, cooked adinner, and prepared an interesting program for this first reunion ofold grads in what is now the Legion Hall. The idea caught on in theminds of the graduates who attended in large numbers, and thus beganthe alumni banquet which has been a gala occasion each spring with theexception of the war years when it was discontinued during the emergency. In 1924 the roster of alumni totalled one hundred and ninety-four, butsince that time the membership has grown fivefold, and graduates havescattered to all parts of the world, taking a bit of E.H.S. with them.MISS URA SANDERSof GosportClass of 1886The oldest living alumnaof Ellettsville High SchoolCourtesy ofELLETTSVILLE PLUMBING COMPANYELLETTSVILLE FEED STORECHITWOOD HARDWARE 55i ■; .■■■
