Description: (fyaAa **¥tetanyBy Mary Neal and Frank BowenIn the year of 1943 we, the class of 55, began our long years of work and play.Mrs. Leota McNeely started us on the road to education and taught us the fundamentalsof printing and the abcs. Finding that all of us completed our first year of school,we went on to the second grade. There Mrs. Roy McNeely introduced us to a subjectcalled arithmetic which was strange and extremely hard. On to the third grade, we metMrs. Mary Frances Kleindorfer, who guided us through our miseries. We added anothersubject to our list, geography. Surviving the third grade, we continued our journey tothe fourth grade with Mrs. Mae Rowe as our teacher; and in the fifth grade Mrs. MaxineSampson was our teacher. When we entered the sixth grade, our class was divided intotwo sections with Mrs. Frances Deckard and Mrs. Emily Lyles as our teachers. Finally, after six long years, we had reached junior high school. We had class officers and parties, and several boys were on the junior high basketball team. Mrs.Elizabeth Bartlett was our sponsor in the seventh grade and Miss Frances Harding inthe eighth and the first two years of high school. After graduating from grade school, we entered high school and were known asgreen freshmen. Everything happens to a freshman, including the initiation. In it weswallowed our pride, and the girls came to school wearing mens long underwear and theboys, nightgowns. The highlight of the freshman year was the Freshman Banquet, whichhad a May Day theme. In our sophomore year we gained revenge as we initiated thefreshmen.Mr. Earl Tharp greeted us as our sponsor in the junior year. This was the year wehad to scrimp and save money for our prom and banquet and also our senior trip. Wepresented our first class play in the second semester of this year.During our senior year, Mr. Tharp left to accept a new position, and Mrs. AlicePearson became our sponsor. We worked harder than even before to raise money totake a trip. Finally, the night that we had all been waiting for arrived, our graduation. The last time our class was together was on our senior trip to Washington, D. C. andNew York City.Sponsored byMAYS INSURANCE AGENCYCHITWOOD HARDWARESe*Uo>u *)« 1943ROW 1: Ann Gifford, Wilma Hamm, JoanAbbitt, Deloris Goble, Marie Crum, LoisNethery, Mary Neal.
