CLASS HISTORYIn the fall of 41 we, the class of 1953, embarked upon our twelve year educational career with Mrs. LeotaMcNeely as our teacher. We learned to read about Tom and Nancy, and Miss Reeves taught us our ABCs in aspng. That year the first and second graders had the thrill of a train ride—all the way from Ellettsville toBloomington. In 1942 we moved into a new room and acquired a new teacher, Mrs. Frances McNeely. Then we startedto unravel the mysteries of arithmetic, which we found out later was a job that was to last at least nine years. The big highlight of the year was a Valentine postoffice which was operated in a very legal way. Each studenttook a test, and the one who made the highest score became the postmaster. The other students assisted in theorder of their grades.Years wore on and the class advanced from grade to grade. Some children moved away, and new ones movedin; thus we kept our record of being the largest class in school for several years. Mrs. Kleindorfer, Mrs. Luce,Mrs. Moser, and Mrs. Tapp guided us through grades three, four, and five.In the fifth year we became victims of division in more ways than one. We not only had problems dealingwith division in arithmetic, but the size of our class was a problem too as a result of moving Vernal Schools students into E.H.S. A lack of room brought about the division of our class into four sections. After careful preparation in the sixth grade by Mrs. Frances Deckard, we became a part of the rushing throngof students who changed from room to room for their classes. That year we received the privilege of electing officers, collecting dues, and having parties. We were given a sponsor, Miss Mildred Reeves, who was to be ouradvisor, guide, and helping-hand. In the eighth grade we were honored by a real commencement at BloomingtonHigh School Gym.Again we stepped into another world and received a class name—freshman. We were initiated by the sophomores good and proper, but there was a happy ending to the freshman year--the Freshman Banquet. The sophomore year was uneventful except for the day we initiated the freshman and the ordering of our class rings. In the junior year we made up for everything we had missed as sophomores. We gave two class plays, sentdelegates to Junior Legislature, and gave the seniors a prom and banquet at Skyland Lodge. We also endured theprivilege of selling concessions at basketball games with a goal in mind of having a senior trip in the spring of1953. This year we were granted a second sponsor, Mrs. Alice Pearson. Now as seniors we look back, cherishing the memories of twelve happy years with only the regrets of not having taken advantage of that which was given to us in order to prepare us for the future.Courtesy of PAUL BROWN MOTOR SALES and HUDSON MOTOR CO.of Bloomington |
