By: Anno Rodemochir and Tiffany BoiuerFreshmen students come together to discuss andshare their ideas in Ms. Dirks class.Seminar? What is a socratic seminar? Asocratic seminar is an open formal discussionthat is based on a text by which the leaderasks an open ended question. Studentsprepare for it a day or two in advance and thestudents listen closely to each other, considerother peoples point-of-view and then theyarticulate their own response by thinkingcritically and referencing the text, Ms. Dirksaid. The seminar helps to create strongspeaking and listening skills. Students discusstheir ideas so the rest of the class can buildoff that idea by referencing the text. Ms. Dirkhas three goals for students, The first goal isto have students think deeply about the topic.Secondly, I want students to verbalize theiropinion and support it with textual evidence.Lastly, students should listen intently andcomment on someone elses response. Theseminar is a new type of learning tool thatprovides students the opportunity to use theirminds in a larger way.Freshman Gracie Turner, like saying my thoughts onthe idea or topic.Freshman Olivia Hastings,I like the debate part of it, I likehearing other peoples viewsand perspective.Freshman Nirali Patel,In the seminar I like the waypeople think. My journey is to continue doing well in school and be as positive as I can be. said junior Michael Rusk t J |
