Edgewood High School, El Corral, 2013

Description: FCAFCA, Fellowship of ChristianAthletes, is a non-profit school club thatallows students of faith to meet and reallytalk about their beliefs and how they cancope with difficulties that they faceoutside and during school. The purpose of the club is just to sort of bring God into a schoolenvironment and to be able to have fellowship and pray and talkabout God with fellow students, senior Kevin Wells said. How themeetings work is more of a devotional type thing, whereas wellprepare a talk to give based on some Bible verses, so well share theverses and talk about them and what they could mean and we closeeach meeting with a prayer circle as a group. The club was established a couple of years ago by Mr. Ratliff withthe help of Mr. Sanders. Since then, the group has held meetings andcurrently has about 15 members.I actually like that I feel welcomed and I feel like everybody reallywelcomes each other, junior and FCA member Emily Hiter said. You just feel like everybody is a family.Nichole Culler and juniorTyler SpohnGSA ClubThe GSA, Gay-Straight Alliance, which was started only a fewyears ago, allows students who are questioning or already know theirsexual orientation to discuss and talk to others who feel the same. The purpose is basically just for anyone really to have a safe spaceto talk. Obviously its for gay, or questioning bisexual students, but alsostraight allies are super important, junior Megan Vladoiu said. Its just asafe place where people can feel like they can talk and not be judged.Vladoiu is credited for coming up with the idea of establishing the club atEHS.The club, sponsored by Spanish teacher Ms. Norman, holdsmeetings after school, mainly on Thursdays. Its fun to just talk and when something good happens to someoneelse we all feel good. Were honestly like a family. We have conflicts justlike anyone else but we definitely do have a lot of loyalty to each other,Vladoiu said. The club was thought of when Vladoiu read a book of shortstories and in one of the stories a girl who was questioning her sexualitywent to a GSA meeting for help. Vladoiu decided itd be a good idea tohave one at EHS and set out to make the club what it is today. Its definitely introduced me to differentpeople, Vladoiu said. Its just a space where Ifeel like I can get to know other people whounderstand.GSAf/jr ^*~ ^f I JjjMBjk. A 4wHk
