Edgewood High School, El Corral, 2013

Description: WORKIN GIRLSSenior Hayley GlazeSome students are performing a balancing act between school andhomework, working a job, and extra-curricular activities. Junior Hannah Foxand senior Brittany Moore, employees of Growing Heart Daycare, are tryingto balance the three.Sometimes I ask to leave early from work because we have a ratio withkids. You have to have seven kids then only one person can be there so Iask to leave early if there are only enough kids left for a couple works,Moore said.Although there may be some downfall to having a job, there can also bewonderful rewards.I really enjoy having a classroom full of kids and I get to help them withtheir homework and they are from Edgewood so its kind of cool to tell themhow it will be when they get older, Fox said.Juniors Hannah Nunn andMadison BeerbowerMID-YEAR GRADSA lot of students would like to leave the high school early, but only a fewstudents actually do.For many students, the reason for graduating early revolves aroundobtaining a job, saving money, and going to college. They want to get on with whatever they have; they just want to get on withtheir lives. Some of them will start college second semester their senior year orat least take a couple classes. Maybe they dont start full time but maybe theypick up a couple classes at IU or Ivy Tech, guidance counselor Mr. Faust said. For other students the public school setting is not for them.Occasionally it will be a student who just dislikes school but sometimes theyjust have problems fitting in or whatever, so they just want to leave as soon aspossible for that reason. So its kind of those two it seems like, Mr. Faust said.Whatever the reason, the students are continuing on strong with their lives.Steven Burke graduated mid-year, hoping to attend ivy Tech and study inmedicine.Get a job and go to college, Burke said about his plans after high school. As the graduation date grows closer, Kayla Thorne, a mid-year graduatewanting to attend Sullivan for interior design, ponders on her last winter breakthat she would be spending as a high school student and how she made themost of it.I went to Washington State to see my grandpa and I spent time with familyand friends, Thorne said.Senior Steven BurkeSenior Kayla Thorne
