Edgewood High School, El Corral, 2013

Description: WINTER GUARDNEW YEAR, NEW RULESear winter guard has made some changes, and new rules have been added and enforced. Nowstudents must be in fall season of guard to be amember of winter guard.Yeah, that was a new thing this year. The pastcouple of years you could have been in marchingband and then done winter guard. But this year it wasjust simpler if you already did fall guard and so thatway you dont have to learn everything brand newbecause we are trying to be really competitive thisyear and actually win stuff, junior Abby Marcoux said.Since they all had to come from fall guard theychose to use the same uniforms. This is convenientbecause all the members already have the uniformand dont have to purchase anything new.Quite frankly its gross, they all pretty much smelleven though we have washed them a million times, they still just smell awful, senior Reannon Baugh said. This year the group is working harder than ever tomake it to the state finals and be the best team so far.The new rules make that a more reachable goal.I hope to get into the top five at state finals, coachTaft said.ONLY BOYS ON THE SOUA1)Getting a new coach wasnt the only new and exciting thing that happened to thecheer squad this year. Theyve also had two new additions for the first time in a while -junior Ty Spohn and freshman Ben Nichols. Its different, but everyone seems to roll with it like its normal, Nichols said. Both of the boys enjoy cheering and have adjusted well. Everyone on the squad hasaccepted them and made them feel welcome. Its definitely different. Ben has helped out a lot with JVs stunting, and he comesinto varsitys practice to work on tumbling. Tyler fills in any position where he isneeded and he is a hard working man-leader, senior Macy Walton said.Although it may be a new concept to have boys on the squad, its a plus for theteam. Its easier for the squad to perform certain stunts with the boys as their backspots.I kind of feel at home, Spohn said. The boys and girls grew together as a team and pushed each other to work harder. The team became comfortable with each other, and their chemistry played a factor intheir overall improvement as a squad.Showing the diversity that we do support and that guys can be on cheer and itsalright to do that is a good thing to support because later kids who come in [toEdgewood] want to know that theyre able to do anything they want to, Nichols said.
