Afterstarting the season shaky with a string of losses,the girls pulled together to rally back to a level ofplay that would eventually land them in the State Finals. For the first time in, school history a team made it to the championship game of the IHSAA StateTournament, a game to be played on the same day as graduation. With supportfrom the school administration the time ofgraduation was changed so that the seniorscould participate in two events they had beenworking toward for years. They also had thesupport of classmates and community memberswho could attend both events. The softbaHteam pushed past Lebanon in the final roundAndrean in the Championship game. Althoughjewood lost 9-2, the team was happy to have defied all expectationsthe community and coaches had for them when the season started.Before the team received their second place medals, the IHSAA MentalAttitude Award was given out to Senior Rachel Delay for Excelling inmental attitude, athletic ability, scholarship, and leadership during fouryears of high school. Delay was nominated by the principal and coach, participated as a state finalist,and was selected by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee. The sevenseniors (Paige Ernst, Caycee Thomas, Rachel Delay, Emily Calvin, AmandaGilliland, Cierra Howell, and Ashley Miller) helped lead the team to a winningseason with a record of 21-12. Several records were broken during this seasonincluding, but not limited to, the single season hits record broken by RachelDelay and the career homerun record set by Ashley Miller. The Western IndianaConference All-Conference team consisted of Thomas, Delay, Miller, andGilliland. Forever intertwined in the history of Edgewood High School is the girls2012 varsity team, the team that did what no team had done before.
