SenioRSt f \the 2012 Edgewood Mustang baseball playersfaced many tough teams this year. Perhaps theirfiercest opponent though was adversity. It was anopponent that pushed the Mustangs to the brink butbrought out the very best in them.A large adversity that the baseballteam overcame this year wasinjuries. The Mustangs lostCameron Walls to an ACL injuryand Reece Phillips to back issuesbefore even playing a game. Thisforced the team to insert asophomore and a freshman into thevarsity lineup. Adversity scoredagain when The Mustangs, alreadytwo men down, faced a dauntingschedule. Eight of their first ten matchups featuredhigh-caliber teams and almost all of them were 4Aschools, according to assistant coach Sam Jones. Thetough schedule helped the team develop thicker skinand prepared them for an incredible run down thestretch. That run included wins over BloomingtonNorth, Vincennes Lincoln and West Vigo. Perhaps twoof the biggest wins of the season involved theMustangs avenging losses to Crawfordsville andOwen Valley. After losing to arch-rival O.V. earlyin the season, the Mustangs werent sure theywould get a chance to avenge the loss. But afterO.V. upset West Vigo, a rival rematch was set up.Coach Bob Jones knew his team would be ready.I knew I wasnt going to have to say anything to getour kids motivated. To avenge that loss was onething, but the way we did it by the run rule and provedwho the better team was made it that much better,Bob Jones said. The Mustangs defeated O.V. 14-1 inthe sectional championship game. The O.V. win set upanother oppurtunity to exact revenge; this time, against a team that denied the Mustangs a spotin last years state title game. The CrawfordsvilleLAthenians defeated the Mustangs in the 2011semi-state game. In the regional semifinal, TheMustangs jumped on ace Jacob Bauersback en route to beating Crawfordsvilleand advancing to the regionalchampionship in what was the biggest winof the season. After a shaky beginning, Bauer struck out 12,including nine over the final four innings as theMustangs defeated Crawfordsville 5-3. Bauerwas one part of a stellar senior class thathelped transform theMustangs into an elite3A baseball program.Zach Allam was a two-year starter whoposted a varsitybatting average closeto .400. James Ridgeand Bryan DelosSantos were staplesfor the program andGrant Pedersen filledin at first base this year, according to SamJones. The Mustangs went 18-10 with asectional championship and a regional runner-up finish. Most importantly, the Mustangsstared adversity in the face and never backeddown.*a *<■ h ; S *.* ^^All-Conferencebaseball players:Jake Bauer, JamesRidge, Zach Allam, and Coach JonesSeniorleadership setthe tone for ateam that neversettled forexcuses.Sectional Champs: Sam Jones, Zeb Thrasher, MichaelAllender, Dillon Deckard, Nick Raventos, Kody Richmond,Cam Walls, Ryan Newman, Grant Pedersen, JamesRidge, Reece Phillips, Jake Bauer, Coach C.J., MalloryMickus, Zach Allam, Bryan Delos Santos, Alex Driver, BenKrouse, Coach Kyle, Devan Kronenberger, Trevor Farkas,Coach Anderson, Coach Jones. |
