A^exs*«*AJ3^^More than one way, students have their sayAlthough there are many differentways to communicate, the use of language is the most commonly usedform. For three years everyone is required to take an English class. Itseems to be the same every year butthere is always room for improvement. Grammar isnt just nouns andverbs, its a way to express a meaningthrough a sentence. Likewise literature isnt just a reading but a way toreaching a deeper understanding ofsomeones individual thoughts. SinceEnglish is a required course everyonemust take it but, many have a desireto learn another language. Edgewoodoffers three foreign languages; Spanish, French, and German. For one toachieve not only the native languagebut to know another is a great accomplishment. Foreign Languages are notjust another form of communicationbut, a new culture to explore and understand. These languages combine tobuild a more learned society for thefuture. The lack of a public speaking class hasencouraged English teachers to teach ashort speech unit every year. Not onlyare students taught effective speakingtechniques but they learn to be at easewhen speaking in front of groups. This isclearly visible in the above picture wherejunior Stacey Freetage expresses herthoughts on abortion (during a persuasive speech). Junior Debbie Medleycommented, I think theyre a good ideabut, they are extremely embarrassing.Michelle Kelley, also a Junior stated,Theyre too hard and I get too nervous.Mrs. Libby Hudson explained, Moststudents I teach at one time or anotherwill be asked to get up in front of a groupwhether its a formal or informal situation, and its important that they know afew of the basics. She added thatspeeches were done to help the studentsgain self confidence.Christy and Julie model their sombreros inMurphs class. These seniors are studying their English hard.Frankly, Jill Id rather watch Cosby than anotherGuten Tag film.38 Academicsm* |
