Description: krampus on campusBravo South students attended the annualKrampus night downtown,Krampus is a German folktalethat can be described as adarker mixture of Santa Clausand the Grinch. The legend isnamed after the creature,Krampus, which is a half-goat,half-demon hybrid. Thecreature takes children onSantas naughty list andtortures them in various ways,in some cases even killingthem. If it has such a darkplot, why do Americanscommemorate this storyduring the arguably merriesttime of the year? Accordingto junior Chloe Zumbrun, It isvery weird, and its differentfrom the normal Christmasspirit. Its just a fascinatinglycreepy festival. The traditional festivalincludes a parade ofKrampuses walking down astreet through a cloud ofsmoke, carrying various whipsand brooms. People jugglefire around the beasts andmark the crowd with coal. Itwas amazing to see them allarrive together and jugglefire. It just seemed so out ofthis world, but it was kind ofscary, sophomore CallumThurston recalled. The goal of theKrampuses is to scare thecrowd by weeding out thebad children and markingthem with coal. In thetraditional legend, Krampustakes the children markedwith coal and beats themwith a birch branch. But, inthe festival on campus, hispunishments were tonedback to coal and stickers. Idid get a naughty stickerand coal on my forehead, so Iwould say I am on Krampuslist, joked junior Eli Chafin.-Tabitha Duvallpicture perfect {canop } lightingSouth students took part in the annual downtown lighting ceremony towitness the canopy of lights, and of course, to pose for pictures under theInsfagram-worthy holiday lights,/ like going to the tree lighting because the lights areso beautiful, and I am a townie and it is such a IB-Town and townie thing to do. -junior Zoe VerteramoThe Canopy of Lights brings the entire communitytogether and that has been an amazing thing toexperience. -senior Barbara Granicz71Kenzie Elkesfreshman
