Description: An overall vertically challenged team, the BHSS girlsbasketball players made up for it in their speed. Inpractices, they worked hard to play to theiradvantages with a smaller roster by working on ballhandling and shooting - the key fundamentals neededto make a good basketball team. They learned newplays and worked on ways to better their old ones.Returning sophomore Lauren Leal noted theshift in playing and practicing. In the beginning of theseason we had to learn how to adapt to playing teamsthat would tower over us during games, Leal said.We learned how to use our speed and quickness toour advantage to compensate for our lack of height. Not only did the team have a lack of sizableplayers, but the final year with the class of seniorsne5 was an emotional challenge to overcome. The mostdifficult part of every season is always saying goodbyeto our seniors, Leal said. It is sad knowing that theywont be back the next season.IISFaced with overcoming adversity in many forms, the South girls basketball team did not allow theirgoals for the season to be compromised.Another struggle they had this season wasgetting over the injury barrier. Junior Abigail Eadsnoticed the toll these took on team unity on the court. We had a lot of injuries over the summer so we didntget to play much together until the season started,Eads said. The team remained positive though - theinjured players cheered from the bench by calling outnicknames and even singing songs during time outs. The team saw they were able to face adversitytogether and ended the season with a 14-10 record. The Lady Panthers fought through the first round ofsectionals and lost to the number one rankedColumbus North High School in the second. The girlsmay not have been the tallest on the court, but thechallenges faced as a team certainly made them thestrongest.Athk^ TORRAN BOMBA8^
