when the BANDgoes MARCHING inThe Panther Regiment finished the competition season atthe Cavalcade of Champions at Center Grove - and provedthat they really did march to their own beat.It wasnt winning the PeoplesChoice Award. It wasnt theseemingly random chants fromthe bleachers. The best part ofthe season-closing competition atCenter Grove High School wasnteven the choreography on thefield. For members ofBloomington Souths PantherRegiment, the best part was justbeing together. The return of moves like thedance block didnt hurt thebands performances either.Junior Megan Harrison said thisyears choreography allowed usto show that we were differentfrom the other performers in thecompetitions. The theme of theevent, hosted on October 11, wasthe music of Stevie Wonder whichprovided a platform for someperformance risks on the field. Not all judges like choreography, but it was fun, senior RileyBland said. For upperclassmenlike Harrison and Bland, theunorthodox and entertainingperformance choices of directorMr. Robert Dubinski paid off inunforgettable memories.Bland, a clarinet player, helped to make this yearsRegiment a memorable group. Atthe competitions, the aim of thethis years band was no differentthan it has been in years past:entertain the crowd. You knowits a good show when we get athe band made a name forthemselves at Center Grove.Their enjoyment was palpable. The lively theme left nothing to bedesired from the band membersor the crowd. The jazzy musicmade it fun, freshman KarynTaylor said. The crowd loved it.Rather than sit idly afterperforming, Taylor and her bandmates started to chant. Theycheered in unison and continuedto entertain the audience beforeawards were announced. Thisbonding experience for the groupdid not go unnoticed. Thecheers that we made uplightened the mood, juniorStephanie Smith said. Whenwe won Peoples Choice Award,we knew the audience enjoyed usand picked us out of all the otherbands. The unique choreographyand crowd-oriented attitudeproved the Panther Regimentdifferent from other competinggroups. Thats what broughtpeople to see us compete,Smith said. Maybe the repertoirewas not formal this year, but thepayoff showed that maybe it wasnot such a bad thing.-HADLEY OCHELTREEI.
