Description: . .,;- -...... ...On April ■„$100K-making Dance Marathon trulylived up to the clubs new slogan...omington South students, energizingnce-exhausted dancers and fillingurpie Gym with deafening sound —it was abruptly cut off by anna University Dance Marathonutive. I think I got something wrongwith this, she said, shocking the elatedseniors, who held a $91, 283.14 totalon iheir colorful posters. As she movedaround the students holding giantnumbers, the executive board looked atone another with anticipation - could itbe? Their ambitious goal of raising$100,000 for Riley Hospital had beenthe groups focus for the past year. Now,the moment of truth was approaching. As the official grand total of$100,283.14 was arranged andbroadcastedr cheers erupted, tearsstreamed, and bodies collapsed intriumph. They had done it.Every April for the past nine years, hundreds of students had gathered inBloommgton Souths Purple Gym todance for countless hours as participantsof Bloomington South Dance Marathoncharity that benefits Riley?ns Hospital. But in 2014, a yearthat will surely go down in BSDMhistory, something astonishinghappened: Bloomington North andSouth came together to make BSDM thesecond high school marathon in thecountry to raise more than $100,000.Going from last years total to thisyears total was truly incredible, freshman Ava Vickers said, regardingthis years record-breaking sum.But not only did. the studentssurpass their seemingly impossible goal, but they also raised close to $30,000more than the year before, making it thebiggest fundraising leap at BSDM todate. Its still pretty surreal, honestly, said Mr. Joe Doyle, the administrativehead and founder of Dance Marathonat South. We started talking about thisgoal in 2012, however it was keptsecret and was just a theory then ... butat the end of last year, I kind of juststarted saying it.Senior Kathleen Moore, 2014BSDM President, heard it. Weunderstood that we were only a few\7 w1 clever steps away from reaching the!I goal, she said, And this year wej■ decided to really just focus on those:steps. Some of these steps involved:improving existing fundraisers andfcreating new events. Red Hot for Riley,mm event filled with live %iusic an^games, was a massive success that mcthan tripled its profits from thebefore, raising around $3,000. <sueNights which raised collectively over?;I$2,000. To contribute at that volume —jnow thats impressive, Doyle said.Senior Kirby Anstead, a four-timemarathoner, explained, I never lost faitin our amazing senior executives who, knew, were working their hardest tccontinue moJdngTincredible club. But besides the incredible amountraised, Anstead and Vickers agreed thatwhen it comes down to it, its allabout.,Jthe wagon. Anstead said, Dance^[Marathon is not only about the mone>but also the awarenessthose involved with putting on such a lifechanging event.
