Q Patterned pants all the wayThree South students banded together to take on the music scene. The crowd lights dim as the spotlightshines. Suddenly, every head in theroom turns toward four band memberswho have bravely taken the stage. Afour count in, and the rock music begins.Such was a normal occurrence forBloomington High School South seniorErik Bennett and juniors NathanSidell and Joseph Heise, members ofthe band Transient Void. The band wasformed through Rewind, a downtownBloomington business that joins localstudents interested in music andperforming through their School ofRock program. Bennetts band playedwhat he described as a different kindof mixed punk-rock 90s punk mixed withnew generation punk.Though each band memberplayed a specific instrument, allcontributed to the writing process. Illwrite my guitar parts, [Ethan Gabbard,a Mooresville High School student] willwrite his guitar parts, Joe will write hisbase parts, and Nathan will write hisdrum parts, Bennett explained. Thenwe just kind of put them together and fixthem so that theyll mash. And mash they did. All ofTransient Voids work and fixing paidoff, landing the band a spot playing atRhinos Chocolate Prom on January 30.The band played their full set ofeight songs at the event - three of themband-written originals. Bennettdescribed those three as usually theirbiggest songs...at least, thats what wethink. Their song The Wind was theirbiggest hit of the night. While the band enjoyed theexperience, they were no amateurs.Transient Void played regularly atRhinos, Rachels Cafe and smallervenues in Indianapolis. In addition totheir two to three performances amonth, they practiced between six to12 hours a week, with all-nightpractices on every other Saturday. Butthat was no hindrance for thebandmates in terms of creating music. The band doesnt take up too muchtime, said Sidell, and if you just setpriorities ... its not too bad.Transient Void had no plans ofstopping anytime soon. Heise hadnothing but praise for his fellowbandmates. These guys, I love makingmusic with them, he said. Bennett saidpursing in music in college was not inthe cards, but whether he will stick withplaying in a band? Oh, Ill be in aband, he confided. Always.-BRYNN PARKINSON |
