Backstage at Cardinal Stages Willy Wonkaand The Chocolate Factory was an amalgamof chaotic scenes. Mixed with the atmosphere ofpre-performance jitters, there were goldentickets, chocolate bars and colorful costumes asfar as the eye could see. There was something particularly chaoticabout this show, compared to previous Cardinalperformances: children dressed as OompaLoompas abounded. Sophomore MadelynAllender, whose role as a chorus memberrequired her to move set pieces as well as singand dance, said [working with so manychildren] wasnt really a big deal. I like little kidsand it was fun to work with them. The age of the cast members had adifferent effect on senior Courtney Mitzel, whoacted as spoiled child Veruca Salt. Ive playedlittle girls a lot, Ive played mean a lot too, butIve never played mean little girl, so that wascool, Mitzel said. It was funny because my[counterpart in the other cast] was 1 2. Shes likea little Shirley Temple and Im just me.Even with so many children in the cast,Cardinal maintained a professional theaterenvironment. Mitzel explained the companyhad a different feel than many workshop basedtheater programs in the area, which requiredstudents to pay for a learning experience thatculminates in a production. We didnt have topay [to be in the show], because its like a job.As opposed to learning how to be a betteractor, youre just playing the part youre given. This allowed the young actors to experience anenvironment similar to what professional actorsexperience — an occupation that many of themaspire to have. However, a serious atmosphere did notkeep the students from enjoying themselves.Allender described it as a really fun processoverall, though she admitted that things didntinitially run smoothly for Willy Wonka. Oneof the interesting things was when the fire alarmwent off, which happened a few times actually, because there was a lot of fog used in theshow, Allender said. Whatever kinks were atfirst present, the Wonka cast soon dealt with -having some fun in the process. [Working onthe show] was stressful in the beginning, but thenit turned out a lot better as soon as we starteddoing runs, and I had a great time.- MACKENZIE MOTSINGER-ft= BESTOF =2013In honor of the newyear, heres theprevious year inreview.MUSICAL ARTIST jJustin Timberlakef**ra choco 01eAmidst the chaos, Cardinal Stagepulled off another huge holidayproduction — and had fun whilethey were at it.■**-*nt ofplingactory.Weidenbener was one of five BloomingtonSouth students in the cast of Cardinals holidaymusical Willy Wonka and the ChocolateFactory, which played from January 20 toFebruary 4.
