Description: As the clock wound down, the cheersstarted. This was really happening. Thegirls smiles widened. The buzzersounded and people stormed the fieldas the trophy was held high for all tosee; the Bloomington South girlssoccer team had beaten BloomingtonNorth and were the SectionaChampions for the first time since,2009.This was a first for everyone onthe team: the seniors, underclassmenand especially first-season coach IanRickerby. It was really great to beatNorth, especially since we lost to themthe past three years, said junior MiyaiNourie. We had beaten them in theregular season, so we knew we couldwin again where it really counts. Afterthe loss of 1 1 seniors last year, thegirls really stepped up and worked asa team to win their sectional title underthe leadership of their new coach.A big change this season, CoachRickerby added his witty commentsand enthusiastic approach to the gameto help the team improve dramatically.This year, there was a lot of learningto do, but we all came together as anew team with a new coach and anew attitude ... Were really happywith how the season turned out,commented junior Abigail Smith, whoplayed the position of goalie.Overall, the girls soccer teamhad a fantastic season - especially theseniors, who finally achieved theirlong-deserved sectional win againstrival North. The team did not advancepast regionals, but the girls plan toreturn there next year and for manyyears after that. Although next seasonsteam will lose nine seniors, thereturning players remain optimistic thatthey can recover from the loss andcome back strong; said Nourie: Wehave a lot of gaps to fill next season,but hopefully, with some positionchanges and good incomingfreshman, well be able to do as wellor better next year.- HALLIE PEDERSENJJJjJJ^ Senior Ashley Judge goes in to attempt a goal against many defenders. Judge did notmake the goal, but still helped the team to a victorious season. TWO Seniors Madyson Kellerand Charlene Sapal cheer after getting a goal at the game on August 29 against New ATStoy.Both Keller and Sapal were key players in the success that the team ifeceived. Tl li1TT%tij|iTiAbby Smith goes up to block a goal at the New Albany game. The godwhas a lot >put on her back, but Smith did her job, allowing only one goal while Bloomington South scoredseven goals. FOUR Junior Victoria Fosha dribbles the ball through New Albany defenders. Withas many hat tricks (three goals in a single game) as a magician, Fosha was a integral player inthe panthers win.
