Bloomington High School South, The Gothic, 2014, Page 26

Description: HE SOUL COEThe South Panther Regiment embodied their theme offun throughout one of their most successful seasons ever.Fun was not only the theme for theBloomington South Panther Regimentthis past year: it was a state of mind. This theme, according to seniorJanay Stephney, brought all of theband members out of their shells morethan previous years.Everyone got a lot closer, saidStephney, a fourth-year member ofColor Guard. It was more like family. The closeness gave students theextra boost they needed for success:for the first time in several years, theSouth marching band took home asecond place trophy at Simon-KentonHigh School in Kentucky. Severalseniors from the Regiment believedtheir unanticipated win was directlyrelated to the amount of fun they hadduring the competition. The more fun we had, the moremotivated we were to practice and puteffort into competitions, said seniorGordon Jarrold, a trumpeter. Theamount of fun we had definitelyaffected how well we did.Performing in a torrentialdownpour, some band membersworried that the rain would hurt theirchances at success, but their fearsappeared to be unfounded.[Receiving the trophy] was probablythe most exciting thing weve hadhappen in a while, said Stephney.Senior Thomas Knight, amember of the drum line, sharedsimilar thoughts. . [Our victory] waspretty exciting, because second placeisnt an award we get too often, headmitted. Its pretty awesome.Various band memberscelebrated the achievement in theirown ways; for instance, several seniorstook time to reflect on how the bandhad evolved over the years. Knight, asa member of the drumline, marveled athow much the band had improved, enabling them to play morechallenging pieces. This year, a lot more peoplestepped up than ever before, remarked senior Sarah Goy. Ascaptain of the Color Guard, Goyenjoyed watching other members growover the years and being a role modelfor the rest of the guard; I feel like Igot closer to all of the different girls, she explained. With fun the seniors wavedfarewell. But despite this, throughoutthe upcoming years, the PantherRegiment will keep marching on.-LUCILLE POWERSNOW THATS THE SPIRIT!During spirit week, Bloomington South students dressed up as as theirfavorite characters, tourists, and 80s personas.
