TheWonderLab booth, in the center of theFourth Street Festival, gave a way forthe festivals youngest attendants tohave some interactive fun. SeniorArielle Moir and sophomore PatriciaMoon volunteered at the booth to helpchildren of all ages make origamicreatures, including fish, foxes andwhales. Despite their inexperience withorigami, both girls were able to assistthe kids, having honed their volunteerskills at WonderLab Museum ofScience, Health and Technology.Moons inner child came out asshe attempted the folds for the firsttime. I was learning how to doorigami at the same time as the kids,Moon said. She enjoyed showing kidsan activity she thought was fun, even ifshe considered herself an origaminovice. She liked working with the kidsand giving them the opportunity to getcreative on their own.Moir described the task as anopportunity to interact with kids bymaking a community art project, whilebeing surrounded by the vendorsselling their own art. A four-yearWonderLab volunteer, Moir has alsohad three years of prior experiencevolunteering at community events andloves working hands-on with kids.Although the students shiftsended after three hours, the projectwould long outlast the two-day festival. The origami fish mobile was displayedinside Wonderlab, so that everyonecould revisit the excitement of thisyears Fourth Street Festival.Viewing art is one thing, butbeing a part of its creation can bemore memorable. Moir and Moonwalked away feeling good aboutmaking art come alive for children, hoping that their new origami pupilscould also appreciate theiraccomplishments as artists.- SARAH BRUNER & EMILY MOONHot air balloons soar above the Monroe County Fairgrounds atthe first annual Kiwanis Club of South Central Indiana BalloonFest.
