Description: |
IT ALL STARTED WITH AN IDEA. One little spark that fed a bigger dream: build anew solar-powered car that could race alongside vehicles of a higher caliber, likethose the Solar Bike Team had admired at the World Solar Challenge in Ogata-Mura,Japan last July. Then this impulse led to action - real action. The team put their projectinto motion at the start of September and undertook the daunting but ever-interestingtask of constructing a solar car from molds borrowed from Purdue University.Suddenly, senior Addison Elkins found his afternoons occupied by tasks that hadpreviously seemed foreign to him: patching up carbon fiber with bondo putty, cuttingand constructing the carbon shell with epoxy, and even grinding away at a metalbracket, sparks flying. This is a huge project, Elkins said. We started from scratch. We started with nothing. But at Bloomington South, nothing can take you far. Witheach after-school work session in Ms. Cindy Kvales busy third-floor lab, the teamgrew one step closer to achieving their goal of creating a fully functional — and fast —solar-powered car that they hoped to race in Texas that summer. Even our far-fetchedideas are coming into sight, Elkins said. The first trimester is full of far-fetched ideasike this one, but when South students put their minds to accomplishing a task andwork together as a team, their ideas arent really so far-fetched anymore. A dreamcan lead to a solar car. A talented group of singers can bring a beloved but heartbreaking musical to the stage. A brave bunch of juniors can sign up for — andhopefully pass — the first third of HD Physics. A new class of freshman can learn tonavigate those busy hallways. New beginnings become well-established realities. All ittakes is that first impulse. SO, SOUTH. READY, SET, GO. |
