Bloomington High School South, The Gothic, 2015, Page 96

Description: A rough and scattered start to the season didnot deter the baseball team from earningstate-worthy success. It must have been the new backstop. Or maybeit was the senior inside joke about Smokey theBear. Whatever the magic was surroundingthis season, the Bloomington High SchoolSouth baseball team caught it and ran all theway to Semistate with it.While the collective focus was on thegame, the team had to divide their attentionthis year. Fundraisers had not been a regularoccurrence for the baseball team, but the 1972backstop had to go. Junior and secondbasemen Luke Barrow said the currentbackstop was ice-age old.The ten seniors leading the team werealso concerned with the legacy they hoped toleave behind. Filling the shoes of last yearseight starting graduates, seniors ZacharySimunic and Cameron Prince wished thattheir bond would be enough. This group ofseniors grew up in baseball together and faceda learning curve this year when the seasonbegan. Beginning with a tumultuous jumble ofa tie, a couple of wins and a four-game losingstreak, Simunic, Prince and the rest of theseniors were doubtful about a strong statemagictournament appearance.A 10-0 shut out helped rid the doubt.Cross-town rival Bloomington High SchoolNorth lost brutally to the Panthers at home. The Panther record from this point forwardwas not undefeated, but the team found itsgroove and rode the wave to a first-roundSectional victory over Shelbyville High School. Each subsequent win was a welcomedcelebration for the team - unexpected from thebeginning, but a product of the confidenceand bond which strengthened with theseason. A nail-biting 4-3 Regionalchampionship win over Evansville Reitz onJune 6 propelled the boys into the elite groupof Semistate contenders.Regardless of the source of the magic, the Panthers will to succeed brought out thetalent and ability at just the right time.-SIERRA TRIMBLEhits outta here! The success of Bloomington Souths baseball team comes down to the number ofhits and runs in each game. Leading the team with the highest number of homeruns is senior Henry Niswander with four. In addition to Niswanders hits out ofthe park, junior Nicholas Wright set the bar high with 20 RBIs, or runs battedin.[Hitting a home run] is a great feelingbecause you know your hard work hasfinally paid off**-junior Tyler HollowayA96 ATHLETICS
