Description: Although the two trimesters of Physical Education are required forBloomington High School South students, the class can still be an excitingenvironment in which lasting friendships are made.Physical fitness can be defined as a general state of health and well-being.But in Bloomington High School Souths gym class, its more than that.Physical education (PE) is a structured class where students not onlymaintain fitness, but form friendships and bond through physical activity. Itmay be required, but it is one of the most important and enjoyable classes atSouth.PE follows a similar structure every day, according to freshman YefryTaake. First we go into the locker room and change, Taake said. Afterthat we usually go to the white or purple gym, run for a while, then go intowhatever unit were doing. Sports are played with mild direction, accordingto Taake, with the teacher definitely telling [the students] what to do, butonce [they] start doing it, they can mostly just do [their] own thing.PE may be structured and run under a set of rules, but ther§. isalways time to form friendships and bond with others. You can meet new people through gym, get to know them while doing something fun,Taake said. I met Luke Hensley through gym; we werent really fiendsbefore, but now we talk a lot. Freshman Luke Hensley agreed. Yefry andI had only talked a little bit before, but through gym I got to know him a lotbetter, Hensley said Playing sports is an excellent way to bond, as manystudents find out through freshman gym class. When youre part of a team, you have to help each other out in order to win the game and have fun, saidTaake.Gym may be a requirement, and it might not be one of the most Iexciting classes students look forward to taking at South. However, it is ahighly beneficial class that allows for the nurturing of important non-academicskills and the formation of bonds between students.- CALEB NORIEGAI looked through the doorway andthought to myself, class probably isntin here today.-senior Amira SabryThere were a bunch of people runninginto the classroom and putting towelson the floor; it was an interestingmorning.-sophomore Davis Joseph. We had to take our final in Mr.Raneys room, which threw me offat first, but it turned out fine.-sophomore Mohammed Dabdoub22 ACADEMICS
