its hammer timeStudents in Bloomington High School Souths Habitat for Humanity club build houses ! mmfor families in Monroe County. ^^After a strenuous, satisfying morning ofvolunteering, members of Souths Habitat forHumanity chapter took a break from hammertime to devour a table of Chipotle catering ontheir lunch break. Perks of the job, Habitatmember senior Cassie Newland said. However, its not all about the burritos.Habitat for Humanity is significant because, It[Habitat] allows people who wouldnt otherwisebe able to afford a house to have a newhome, south chapter president senior YoungJun Woo said.Habitat subsidizes the cost of a newhome through volunteer work, That way thehomeowners are only responsible for the costof the materials used to build the house, Woosaid.Another way to keep costs low is byhaving the future homeowners themselvesparticipate in the build. All candidates for anew house have to put in 250 sweat equityhours in order to get their house, Newlandsaid. This policy, combined with the work ofvolunteers from South, helped to create aclose-knit atmosphere at the build, worked with several other future homeownin addition to the family we were building for, junior Jean Lee said. It was really funworking with them knowing we were helpingtheir dream of owning a home come true.l- LUCILLE POWERSfor ■:;; county |
