For junior AlexanderRice, these challenges were faced asa patient at Riley Childrens Hospital, which was why he was honored asone of eight 2012-2013 RileyChampions, an award sponsored byKroger to recognize Rices inspirationand commitment to other Rileypatients.Kroger started the RileyChampions award in 2008 torecognize patients that have kept anuplifting spirit and taken initiative tohelp in the community and aroundRiley and shared their story toeducate others. Alex was the epitomeof a Riley Champion; he always hada smile on his face, he shared his storywith others and he was constantlylooking for ways to help those inneed. Being a Riley Champion isreally fun, I get to travel around andshare my story with others, said Rice.Rice was diagnosed with acondition called Moyamoya soonafter he was born. Moyamoyacaused the arteries leading to thebrain to narrow, which withoutmedication, could result in strokes.Ive been going to Riley since Iwas two weeks of age, Riceexplained. However, even a lifetimeof hospital visits could not hold Riceback. Rice was a well-known andwell-liked student, getting activelyinvolved around South, helping outaround his community and sharing hisexperience as a Riley patient toinspire and help others throughprograms like Dance Marathon. His efforts did not go unnoticed, and Rice appreciated the recognitionhe received. Getting to see all myhard work pay off and being able todo all the fun things I do has kept megoing, said Rice. South was proudto list Rice among its many otherbrave champions.- BAILEY BOLERLv:* |
