Description: zzMR. DJ WONT YOU TThe local radio station WFHBhosted a wide variety of shows, but every Saturday night theairwaves would belong to acertain set of disk jockeys:Bloomington teenagers. As part ofYouth Radio, students of ages 1 3-18 recorded pieces for a talkshow, prepared their own playlistsand hosted one-hour live shows.Junior Victoria Holle andsenior Kedric Herstad were twoof several Bloomington Southstudents that joined Youth Radio, planning out their shows everyThursday and signing up for slotsto host live shows each Saturday. Each Youth Radio show wasdifferent. Herstad tried to play allkinds of music. I switch out fromweek to week. I like a lot of oldiesmusic one week and maybe somepop music the next, he said.Holle described her showsas particularly kind of random, but I always include a DresdenDolls song and a Beatles song.Herstad and Holle enjoyedYouth Radio for different reasons. For Holle, it was about thefreedom. I like being able to bereally open because the adults [atWFHB] are very accepting of ourviews, Holle said. Its really niceto talk things out with them, anddont feel like Id get in troublewith them. For Herstad, it was all aboutthe excitement. The thrill of beinglive on air is my favorite part,Herstad said. Its really nerve-wracking but its really fun.Youth Radio was anopportunity for participants toshare not only their music, but theirinterests and opinions as well. Itwas more than just a radio show -it was also a creative outlet.- DENISE DOROTHEOthesisa growing collection of photosjr >, * . e : . t- -■* m *A young entrepreneur sellsa cup of lemonade to acustomer on Lemonade DayBloomington, May 18.Children constructedlemonade stands aroundBloomington to learn how toplan, organize and operatetheir own business.
